Obama's words cause a big sigh of relief for medical marijuana dispensaries

West Hollywood, California (Thursday, March 5, 2009) - West Hollywood’s medical marijuana dispensaries took a huge breath of relief away from Attorney General Eric Holder’s pronouncement that the US Justice Dept. would no longer raid them West Hollywood’s pot clubs were first raided in 2001 by the Bush Administration, with several raids taking place after WeHo became the Southern California Mecca of dispensaries in 2004.

The so-called “Yellow House,” a part of a chain of dispensaries known as the McDonald’s of pot clubs, fell first, in early 2005, followed by at least three more raids in subsequent years.

In a news conference last week, General Holder said, “"What the president said during the campaign ... is now American policy."

President Obama repeatedly said the Bush administration’s policy of trying to stop compassionate use of medical marijuana would be ended.

Americans for Safe Access, a group that promotes legal access to medicinal marijuana, called the comments, "the latest sign of a sea change" in federal policy. To read more
